The aroma of freshly roasted pistachios fills the narrow street surrounding the port of Aegina Island. "We must not forget to buy pistachios" say the visitors to the island looking at the counters of shops while  probably they still have in their mouth the fresh flavor of pistachios roasted with salt and sour (lemon flavor).
After the end of the First World War,  the Mayor of Aegina Island invited Mr. George Fortouna, (who was specialized in central heating systems and reservoirs in Berlin), in order to build a water reservoir in Aegina.  Mr. Fortouna fall in love with Aegina island right from the beginning and decided to grow there the pistachios. "In 1923-24 he established the first pistachio nursery on the island. Then he started buying little by little more land for planting pistachio trees.
Inside the plantations of Gkika, among  the oldest families engaged in growing pistachio trees, is located the very first pistachio tree planted in AEGINA island by Mr. Fortouna.  Mr. Thanasi Gkikas is a Pistachio grower since 60 ago  with his wife being his inseparable companion.  However , presently the lead, has been taken by their daughter Nota and her sons.  The Grandfather Mr. Gkikas had his own philosophy for the land , which justifies the huge size of agricultural land (pistachio plantations) belonging to the family: "Land as big you can see and house just enough to accommodate you" he used to say,  while he kept  buying at a fast pace more and more acres of land , where he planted pistachio trees.
